Derek,

What is the make/model of your motherboard?  Is it possible for you to try
printing on another linux system?  It's possible that your motherboard usb
ports may not support the correct protocols.

Just for the heck of it can you try removing and reinstalling the printer?
ie delete the printer queue and set it up again using hp-setup.
