I don't think there is an interrupt conflict because
then I assume even plain printing would not work.

Use
cat /proc/interrupts
to see which interrupts are currently in use.
"Currently" means that this may change when other kernel
modules are loaded.

I also don't think it's a cable problem (except you tried
several same cable models) - but to be safe I liked to mention
that it might be a cable problem.

I got a user information about a broken cable where plain printing
worked under Windows but not under Linux.
