I have not tried running Open Office yet, does the Linux version need
Java as well? I'll start it up and see what it does next time I'm
down there. But you're right, editing docs etc. would be useful.

Well, Java is required for Open Office to run, which could be a big
perk for folks wanting to do reports or write screenplays or mind-
mapping... etc., etc.
Also, check out InkScape, it's a vector graphics design program a la
Illustrator - less intuitive and less robust than Illustrator, but
good for simple logo design.

Ubuntu 6 on a two G3 iMacs, and Xubuntu 6 on another of them (which
does run faster on that hardware). There's supposedly a version of
Java that will run on the powerPC in that OS, but it requires some
special install process that I'm unfamiliar with. The Java thing is
really just a perk, I'd like to see Processing running on these
machines, but they are so "ancient" at this point I'm not sure
really what could be done with them.
Firefox and the GIMP both work like champs on the little candy
colored boxes though, so, considering they are free public access
terminals seems good enough even if the Java install never works.

Which version of Java? Which version of Linux?

So far it works, having difficulty installing Java, but these are
primarily web kiosks anyhoo. This is the first install of any
flavor of linux on any machine at 911 Media Arts Center, as far as I
know, which also means the first install of linux on any computer at
a community run NW US media arts center. The Piksel folks may be
amused by this...
