Award-winning Seattle producer, musician and composer Wayne Horvitz is pleased
to
partner with ACT - A Contemporary Theatre's Central Heating Lab - to present
Smokestack
Arias, a song cycle for soprano voice, piano and electronics. Commissioned
through
Jack Straw Productions, with support from Meet the Composer, the work brings
light
to the labor uprising that culminated in the events known as the Everett
Massacre.
Each song assumes the perspective of a different woman affected by the uprising
and the deaths of slain protesters, giving a personal account of a seminal event
in the history of the labor movement in the Pacific Northwest.
Composed by Horvitz with text by Robin Holcomb, and directed by experimental
theatre
artist and choreographer Dayna Hanson, Smokestack Arias features Cristina Valdes
(piano) and Maria Mannisto (soprano).

Musicians Gretta Harley and Sarah Rudinoff from We Are Golden share music,
stories
and images while taking you into their process of creating the original rock
play/musical,
These Streets. They will also discuss making music now, youthful passions,
unintended
consequences, and what happens when a bright light shines on a dark city.
These Streets is an original rock musical inspired by the lives and music of
young
female musicians in Seattle during the "grunge" years of 1989-1994. In addition
to the theatrical production, which will debut at ACT Theatre in
February/March
2013, These Streets includes an oral history project featuring interviews with
women in the Seattle rock scene from the late '80s to early '90s; an
educational
project aimed at adding music written by women to the standard rock repertoire
taught to kids; and a visual art show featuring material gathered throughout
the
process.

Crystal Beth* is a solo project featuring multi-instrumentalist/composer Beth
Fleenor.
Crystal Beth spins sound using voice, clarinet, loops and effects, weaving a
participatory
aural ritual that encompasses Fleenor's body of urban tribal chants &
improvisations,
alien disco breaks and robot love songs.
Believing that "art is the discipline of being," Fleenor seeks to use sound to
open
the channels of communication between and within individuals and environments.
