I did come checks with strace to this end. On my 32bit Linux, enblend 
consumes at max 751.45 MB for data space. However, it uses mmap2 for 
accessing the files to blend, and this consumes another 3927.75 MBytes 
of RAM.
The values for the patched version differ in data space consumption 
only: it uses 704.77 MBytes.

Therefore, I conclude that the -m switch does only limit the use of 
memory for data space. Depending on the size of the files you try to 
blend, the total memory footprint can be much higher.
