One fix that probably should be done for other reasons would be to merge the 'Identify' and 'Show control points' modes. i.e. selecting 'Identify' should show all control points initially. Then when you move the mouse over the canvas, either the points should vanish while images are 'identified', or only those points related to those images should be shown.
