It has to do with the photometric optimization. If you run everything manual from the edit panorama->photos tab like add images (in random order), run cpfind, do the optimization and then the photometric optimization you get an error that it can't find overlapping points. In the automatic assistant mode you don't get any results at all which makes it look like as if cpfind didn't work.
