I did a short test on Windows.
When opening a medium sized pto project, the (full) screen remains white
for about a minute (without any feedback). During this time the viewer
takes all available memory and blocks the computer.
Hugin opens the same file immediately and remains responsive. It tooks
about 20 s until all full images are loaded. The memory usage is also
significant lower.

A short test with the exposure fusion resulted in bright and dark areas
instead of nicely fused result.
