I said simple dance track, i didnt mean basic.

anyone can make a four on the floor 4/4 track.

if you want basic then your on the right lines:

           1***2***3***4***
 Kick: * * * * *
 snare: * *
 Synth: * * * *
 hats: * * * *
 hats: ****************

the snare can be replaced with a clap..especially if its filtered, for a
meaner effect. If your working this way, then whatever key you are using
for your bassline, go up an octave or two from that and work out a melody,
which is easy enough, just play with the keys while the bassline is moving,
and you'll come up with something. or if you cant find anything then change
the patch and you will. Or just play the keys, one on every beat and one in
between....so you have an 8 key melody, snapped to the grid. then take
the melody that you have found and create variations of it, for later bars.
i love to program tight 16 note sounds, normally an octave above the
melody......but if you cant come up with anything like that, then just
arpeggiate a note, staying in key and also use another two around it. so
your basically playing as chord, but the chord gets split.

the basic and easiest way is 8 bar cycles.
starting in the middle of the track. dont loop anything too long, like over
16 bars or then your listeners are going to get bored quick, you always have
to keep dance music moving. then later, mute a couple of tracks (whether it
be on the rm1x or in any sequencer), perhaps the bassdrum or something
(you'll see what works best when you mute them) and lead to a
breakdown.....cause everybody loves a breakdown....
find a pad to work in the background, or some strings, ..then, unmute,
bringing the track back in and continue.

when youve created your breakdown, then youve basically created your intro
and ending.....these are easily done through variations of the breakdown.

but this is the basic way, and although its effective, its certainly not
groundbreaking. but it'll give you an idea of how to go about building a
track.

when i finish 'Vengeance', the track i am currently working on, i'll send it
to you personally mike, with details on how it was made, and some tips on
how come up with the ideas, and build them.

i hope thats a bit more help.

ps.........if your wanting my personal opinion, then please dont believe the
hype.....that your going to be seeing soon in regards to the
dreamcast.....they are spending alot of money on advertising, but if you
whatch the ads closely, you will only find four seconds of dreamcast gfx,
the rest is all just tosh!..........the specs of the dreamcast are not
impressive at all, although it is a next generation games consol, it is not
all its cracked up to be. This is segas last attempt at getting it right.
but already sony has revealed the specs to its next console........which is
a next next generation system, and is currently not allowed into the states
because it has been classed as a supercomputer!.......it has a new
groundbreaking cpu, faster than the pentium 3, titled the emotion engine, it
can render 70 million polygons a second, rather than 5-10 of the best gfx
cards that are availible today..........if you wait a few extra months you
will be pleased........and its backward compatible too!

but then....if you want a dreamcast then go for it........but i bet yo, that
that will be one thing that sits in the corner of your computer room
