The Akai MPC series allows you to switch in and out of record mode while
playing, but you can't edit the recorded phrases. They are, IMHO, the
ultimate sequencers.  I had one, but I sold it for my 909 and a bunch of
records.  I want another one bad, but they're so damn expensive (for my
budget anyway)

And yes, the 777 is 303 style sequencing.
