I don't understand how "activate" would work unless part of "drain" means
to deactivate the LPAR. Why not "reset clear" and IPL?
===== "drain" means the operator begins to enter a series of commands at the
operator console to stop/cancel the various jobs and stc-s that are running,
culminating in the commands "z net,cancel" "$pjes2" and "z eod"
;; yes, "reset clear" is a possibility, but normally you don't have to do it 3
or 4 times.

<snip>
responds to the various prompts ?.. and nothing happens.
</snip>
are these the HMC prompts or MVS'? I assume that they're HMC's but so you
get the HMC IPL successful message? And does the HMC stay green?

at this point, the prompts I'm talking about are at the HMC:
  when you click on "activate" a small window opens up, saying"to view
activation profile for partition click 'view activation profile' " ; you then
get into a dialog which eventually allows you to see your L1 and L2 parms
REGULAR DATA STREAM == the series of messages which appear on the OPERATOR
console, beginning w/ "IEA371I sys1.iplparm on device ..... "  and culminating
w/ "IEA101a specify system parameters"
"what do you see .... " ==== nothing on the operator console; after you enter
your final "z eod" the stuff *already* on the operator console stays there
until it blanks itself out (the screen does) when the series of messages
beginning w/ IEA371I begin to arrive ;; when those messages DO NOT arrive after
5 minutes, we know it's hung up and then we go do the "reset/clear"

no, we do not get the ipl successful message at the HMC; in any case, the
hardware console never changes color ; it's the (proprietary) IBM HMCz9B
Hardware Management Console Workplace v2.10.0; we got one automatically w/ each
of our z9 mainframes.  it's a GUI-type thing: a "graphic user interface"

<snip>
Before the regular ipl data stream will appear on the System Operator
Console, he/she has to do a ?reset clear? 3 or 4 times, and then another
?activate?
</snip>
What kind of "data stream" and is this on the HMC console or an MVS
console? "Reset clear" on the console of HMC's "resest clear"
==== this is the data streem beginning w/ "IEA371i sys1.iplparm on device
..... " and normally culminating w/ the "IEA101A specify system parameters"  ;;
they appear on the system operator console
"reset clear" is a colophon on the HMC (hardware management console)

thanks
