Willie, I believe that the DELVOL will delete everything on the tape. I don't think that is what you want to do.
I'm kinda confused as to what kind of data is on these tapes. When you said in your original e-mail that they are backups of non-existent DASD, were these full volume DUMPs of the DASD in question or were they dataset-level backups of data that no longer exists? If you're talking about just seeing backup versions of datasets that have been deleted and you want to clean up the backup versions (on HSM backup tapes), you use the BDELETE command. As you just found out, the RECYCLE command doesn't delete anything. It merely takes data that HSM deems is still valid and moves it from the source tape to the destination tape so the source tape can be freed up for reuse. RECYCLE's purpose for existence is simply to free up backup or migrate tapes that you want to clean up - usually because most of the data on the tape has expired. If I issue the DELVOL command would it delete the tape as well as all the dsns on that tape or will it create another tape? This is the first time I am going to try the DELVOL and I am not sure of the ramifications. --- On Mon, 3/15/10, Staller, Allan <allan.stal...@kbm1.com> wrote: From: Staller, Allan <allan.stal...@kbm1.com> Subject: Re: DFHSM QUESTION - CLEAN UP OF BACKUP TAPES To: IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu Received: Monday, March 15, 2010, 8:51 AM HSEND DELVOL xxxxxx DUMP(PURGE LASTCOPY)) Check the manual for exact spelling of lastcopy. In order to release these tapes from HSM control would a RECYCLE of the tapes do the trick? If not, could you suggest another alternative? </snip> ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@bama.ua.edu with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
