David,

That's true, but the capability you get with FlashCopy on IBM and HDS is very
different to what you would see with FlashCopy on IBM and Shadowimage on HDS.
If you were a dual vendor/FlashCopy only shop you may use FDRINSTANT
differently than you do now. Hence my argument that interoperability can be
important to some shops. It's not a level playing field, and it is certainly an
area where the storage vendors are rarely at the same level of support. HDS
customers that waited for FCV2 support were probably had their patience tested
as much as EMC customers that waited for GDPS/PPRC support.

I also believe it is worth looking beyond the generic capabilities that
software like FDRINSTANT does a very good job of providing. For example
FDRINSTANT has no support for HDS AT-TIME split because IBM and EMC do not have
that capability, but AT-TIME may provide Point-In-Time capabilities that some
of your applications can leverage.

I'm not saying that your site cannot do without AT-TIME, it is just not an
option for you while the esoteric capabilities of your storage are masked by a
generic software layer. I believe that it still pays to look at the unique
capabilities of your hardware and evaluate the pros and cons of unique
capabilities, as well as using software like FDRINSTANT.
