For OpenSSH, you will see:
FOTS1668 WARNING: Your password has expired.
You must change your password now and login again!
Enter current password:
Enter new password:
Enter new password again:

Then, this session dies, and when you log in again you use your new
password.

Admittedly, this doesn't help in Gil's scenario.
