That statement used to be true, though not for the reasons Mr. Gilmore cited. For OS/MVT (and possibly MFT), a DSN=NULLFILE would fail unless it also carried a UNIT and VOL specification. I don't recall when the extra check for NULLFILE was added to the interpreter.
