Strictly speaking you don't need to reverse engineer anything - the
Linux crowd proved that with SMB and the TiVo. I sat in on a talk by the
folks that did both - smart bastards then Aussies ...
Treat it like a black box and keep prodding it - sees how it squeaks.
All you have to do is give it the inputs it expects; no requirement to
know the actual code it uses.
