Dragging this thread kicking and screaming back to the OP, yup, it works. I had generic C-callable ATTACH, WAIT, and DETACH functions in assembler. I wrapped some minimal C around them and voila! Only about 3 or 4 hours wasted on this stupid, stupid bit of design idiocy.
