Almost all of these comments/conjectures are reasonable, commonsensical ones.
My impression is, however, much like EJ's. Apart from silly configurations, e.g., a JOBLIB comprised of n concatenated libraries, a different one for each of n job steps, I have not noticed significant differences among configurations, even ugly ones. Anecdotage is never really very helpful in these situations. What are needed are some systematic, carefully designed, replicated measurements, separate ones for PDS- and PDSE-resident libraries.
