Once upon a time I had to change SMPPTS to PDS because of ...size limits. The limit of *single member( for PDSE was not enough to keep my big fat PTF (yes, it was WAS). PDS has no such limit - the limit is full PDS (64k TRK). However nowadays we have PDSE v2 with much bigger limit for member size.
It's for that reason, among others, that we have PTF size limits, and the maximum size of a PDSE V1 member was one of the things on the list (now replaced by the maximum size of a PDS member, because we do not require the use of PDSEs for SMPPTS data sets). If you got the sysmod from IBM, I would be very interested in knowing when it was and what product it was for (if you have that information handy) so I can "educate" the perpetr--um, that is, packager.
Other limits, internal ones aside, are imposed by tape, DVD, and commonly-deployed DASD volume sizes.
