Without specific questions, take a look at the RECEIVE HOLDDATA and REPORT 
MISSINGFIX commands.  SMPPUNCH from the latter creates RECEIVE/APPLY CHECK 
commands for quick opportunities to scan hold reasons, element summaries, file 
allocations, etc. specific to your environment.

I never had to use SMP/E in my career except for simple items, like Receives, 
Applies , etc.
