IBM 70[49]* had negative zeroes.  Both IBM and CDC FORTRANs read
in a blank field as "-0".  There was significant angst among programmers
on discovering there was no way to recognize a blank field used to
represent missing data.

Some theorems in computational numerical analysis depend on the range
of numbers' being symmetrical.  True for ones-complement and sign-magnitude,
but not for twos-complement.
