Richard, I was half way though a post suggesting the same "COPYFILE (PACK" as IBM's preferred method to receive VM dumps when I noticed that Raymond indicated that the dump was a VMDUMP from a Linux guest.
That brings a whole new audience to diagnosing the dump; an audience with whom I've had no contact and who may have their own experience and their own way of doing things. Be interesting to know if the IBM support queue for Linux could handle "COPYFILE (PACK" or "VMARC" VMDUMPs or Linux guests. Could save their FTP directories a few bytes here and there. They also can handle VMARC PACK which usually compresses to a much smaller file than does COPYFILE. It appears that you are trying to teach them a new trick. The problem is that I attempted to send a tersed dumpload file to the Linux Group at IBM for problem resolution. When they read it, it indicated it was not a vmdump. I was attempting to send the dump without the intervening steps. As I write this I think I will respond that they need to deterse the file and then see if they can read it. The dump was taken using #cp vmdump under a linux that had stopped responding. Raymond F. What's wrong with DUMPLOAD?
