The vm you run it in must be big enough to contain the entire DCSS and
some space above for CMS stuff.

Nor is it supposed to do so.  IBM's tool for this is SP[X]TAPE but we
know where that leads us.  VM:SPOOL from CA with the V/SEG extensions
will back them up to disk, or they can be regenerated easily with the
proper VMFbanana incantations.
