And your earlier reference to "connect VM's" actually meant to connect guests rather than z/VM systems? If so, and if the DASD is not shared beyond this (so only among the guests) then z/VM can simulate the reserve/release process by virtual reserve/release (which does not involve the DASD subsystem).
