I'm sure you could do that, but if it is shallow and you are in an area that has cold enough weather for it to freeze solid, you will lose your fish in the winter unless you catch them and bring them inside.
I used to keep fish in my water tank but one year my tank water heater broke down and all the fish froze. Pat G., in MN
