hia,
as far as my personal experience goes, try to avoid running vnc server
in win boxes, especially if they are win 9x's 
and for clients...
just use a java capable browser..ie/netscape...
i don't know why ur getting a text terminal :(
but try typing netscape in that terminal and see what happens
