Friends, I have succeeded in installing internet connection, after
re-installing Mandriva. The changes I made with reference to the
previous installation are:
When asked for removal of unnecessary softwares, I opted  the box
'skip'.  That is, all softwares were allowed to install.
During net work configuration, as usual, selected DSL>pppoe.
When asked for user id, I gave 'use...@bsnl.in' instead of mere 'userid'.
(Example was shown at this time in computer, while not given earlier).
