Isn't this what Linus intended when he released his first kernel? "Here you go, do what you want with it" It's exactly what Mark Shuttleworth did when he searched the Debian mailing lists to form the Ubuntu core team. Whatever you feel about that approach, they did make debian's core easier for the average person to use and they got us all thinking about user experience.
