It's not complicated at all -- you need a kernel, the format of which doesn't vary between distributions, and perhaps a System.map file, which also doesn't vary between distributions. Just be sure that the contents of /lib/modules don't get overwritten by two distributions installing the same version of the kernel; that's a bit unlikely though.
