No. Speculation won't help you to solve performance problems. Identify the problem before trying to solve it. And switching distributions is, in general, not going to help you with anything at all. Use top and vmstat to figure out why the machine is slow (as suggested in another message). I suspect, since you have only 256MB of RAM, that you're being driven into swap too often as you switch between programs.
