Hi,

Here are the minutes of the meeting held at the JNU
Bio-Informatics Centre at 2pm on Sun., July 15th. The
meeting was more of a rambling one than usual, but here
are minutes of what went on:
1. Ankur presented an interesting demonstration of a
radio that besides being a normal FM radio and having
a slot for SD memory cards, can communicate with a
computer over wireless, and can be controlled through
a web interface. The unit can play Shoutcast streams
via the computer, and has decent sound quality.

A lively discussion on licensing issues for broadcast
and Internet radio streams grew out of this, and Niyam
Bhushan has been volunteered to find out, and post
   details on legalities in India.
2. Karanbir Singh presented a nice impromptu talk on NX,
the network communication technology pioneered by a
company called NoMachine. NX, as supplied by the company,
consists of a free server and a proprietary client, though
they have released libnx as open-source, and there is
a project called FreeNX which has reverse-engineered the
network protocol with such success that the company itself
is now in the process of adopting it. The signs are that
NX will soon be totally free.

Karanbir did a live demonstration of the technology,
connecting from JNU to his machine in the UK, which is
behind a 256 kbps connection. He had a window on the local
machine, presenting his GNOME desktop from the remote
machine, and was running Firefox on it for demonstration
purposes. The response of the GUI was pretty snappy.
3. The OSS Camp people were unable to make it to the meeting,
so Vivek Khurana presented a synopsis of his discussions
with them. It seems that OSS Camp is an informal conference
(an un-conference as they like to term it) along the lines
of BarCamp. It is aimed at developers, and currently supported
mostly by people running small companies of 10-50 people.

It was decided to try and meet the OSS Camp people on Wed.
to try and find common goals, and sharing efforts in spreading
FOSS. (Who is setting up this meeting? Niyam? Vivek?)
4. Freed: The site for registering talks is largely up and running.
Here are deadlines for various items of work:
   (a) Content finished by Mon., 16/7: Kishore
   (b) Raj Mathur: Mon., 16/7 night.
o Setting up generic ID for reporting any problems with the
         site.
       o Call for papers.

Regards,
Gora
