Thats the art of fabrication. Or may be an FPGA.

 Do one thing, Buy a ADSL or a wifi router (WRTG
series  preferred as it allows you to play), open the
device and play with it.
 Projects like openwrt allow you to mess around with
wrtg routers a lot. Aternatively you can write your
own stuff and load it.
