I've listened to the record a few times but I'm not sure how I feel about
it yet. I usually like to hold off on my judgments for a couple of weeks
until I get a chance to listen over a period of time. I can say that,
like Andy, I definitely miss the "full band" arrangements.
Heck, I'd settle for a tempo change here and there. I haven't gotten the
metronome out, but my sense is that most of the album moves forward at a
consistent pace. Where are the slow songs, the fast songs, the varied
arrangements? They worked those elements into BOMN, to a certain extent,
so we know it can be done without Steve.
I don't mean to be down on the band. They've made so much music that
means so much to me, they're incredibly talented, and they're great
people by all accounts. Too, they have little kids now, and I know from
experience that if you're serious about the parenting thing, as I'm sure
they are, it's hard to work music into that lifestyle. I can only
imagine the effort it must take if both parents are involved in the
group.
What kind of review is this? I didn't say anything about any specific
songs! But that's because the individual songs haven't grabbed me yet.
They kind of blur together -- the problem I have with same-tempo,
same-arrangement stuff. I'm sure as I get to know the record, the songs
will attain an individual character within my understanding of the work
as a whole, but it may take a while for this one.
My US$0.02.
