Using the Disk Utility that's built into the OS X CD is more extensive, as 
it has more HFS+ specific checks in it. Boot to the OS X CD but don't 
select a language when it comes up... instead, go to the Installer Menu 
and select Open Disk Utility. From there, it works pretty much like Disk 
First Aid. The only gotcha is that you have to select the specific 
partition you want to check (even if there's only one on the disk), not 
the disk itself.
