Personally, I would use CDRs for archiving or backup. CDRW cost about five
times as much, and take longer to write than CDR. Then you can keep your
backups indefinitely instead of wondering when to recycle. CDRW is
convenient for sneakernet of big files.

For smaller backups, if you want to put several on one disk, if you format
disks (CDR or CDRW) as UDF (such as with DirectCD), you can write single
files to a CDR without wasting space, otherwise each session wastes some
(20MB?) space, and is more cumbersome.  

Use branded media (Imation, Sony, TDK, Mitsumi, etc).
Be careful what kind of marker you use to label -- some have solvents that
can destroy the coating. Get a special "CD writing" pen &/or make notations
in the clear section around the hole.
