If you look a their updates page, http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/software_updates.jhtml the last version of DirectCD there is 1.04, bundled with Toast 4. I've read elsewhere that it fell out of favour as later versions of MacOS, seeing the CDRW as a "normal" disk because of the DirectCD driver, kept updating it every time a window opened. As a CDRW is rated at 1000 rewrites, this could exhaust the directory sectors much sooner than you might expect. (This is my interpretation; Roxio hasn't made any statement I can find saying why they dropped it, probably not wanting to assume any liability.) It's too bad, because if you use UDF format on a CDR (not RW) with variable length sectors, it can be very efficient and convenient; only not allowing true erasure (you can make files disappear, but not reclaim the space) . That's what I use on my PC, with no problems for the past year. There is one company now offering UDF for Macs, SoftArch, http://www.softarch.com/us/products/index.html, but I hadn't heard of them before. This apparently only works for recent CD burners with Mt Rainier support. Probably Roxio will come up with something similar soon. -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
