Hello Listers,

I just took my first baby step towards upgrading to OS X on a VERY tight
budget. I snagged a 128 MB RAM module on eBay for only $13.75. I was
pleasantly surprised to find that when it arrived, it was the "low profile"
kind, even though the description said it wasn't. It fit into the lower
slot, making the next 128 MB upgrade a tad easier. Now I'll be able to use
either size SODIMM in the upper slot. (Are all SODIMMs now being made in
the low profile size?) My current RAM totals 192 MB (64 + 128).

My question to the group: is this enough RAM to install OS X (10.1) and
take it for a test drive? I currently have a Classic tray-loading Blueberry
iMac 333, 192 MB RAM, the original 6 gig hard drive, OS 9.2.2.

Eventually, I plan to add a second 128 MB of RAM, bringing the total to 256
(yes - I know I should max it out at 512, but that's all I can afford at the
moment). I know hard drive space will be a tad tight, but I can move any
files or other non-essential stuff to a CD-R. That's pretty much the same
thing I've been doing for years now - keeping only the System and Software
on the hard drive, and everything else on external media, so I'm used to it.
When I can, I plan to put in a 20 gig hard drive, as soon as I find one
cheap enough. 20 gig may seem small to many of you, but that's twice the
size of what I really need. I only keep current projects and enough
downloaded junk from the net until it's enough to fill a CD-R, then burn
copies and delete them from the HD.

So what do you think? Should I go ahead and take the OS X plunge now? Or
should I continue waiting until I install another 128 MB RAM? Any hints,
tips and tricks I should know first?

Thanks,
Gerry
