>>Hi again.
My computer wouldn't shutdown after I had plugged in my external floppy
drive...I had a blue screen with the spinning rainbow disk. Is this the
legendary blue screen of death?
Is this what happens when the SmartDisk is left plugged into the USB
port? I had to UNPLUG the computer to restart.
Are peripherals this problematic...one can't leave them plugged in? Just
SmartDisk products? I can't imagine having to unplug a printer or cdrw
drive.

Donald,

What you have done is one of the recommended trouble shooting techniques to resolve
startup problems; that is, disconnect all peripherals, except for keyboard and mouse,
then restart.

This kind of startup problem occurs when a USB peripheral, added with all other USB
peripherals, draw more power (current) than the USB buss on the Mac is designed to
provide. At startup, the Mac firmware checks the various busses. If it detects a
lower than nominal voltage on a buss, it assumes that there is a buss problem and the
startup either halts or hangs. To correct this, you may want to invest in a quality
powered USB hub; that is, one that has its own power supply...or just live with the
minor inconvenience and plug in the flippy drive after startup.
