Yes, you need them all! Don't delete any extensions unless you know what you
are doing.  Then, I still would not delete any.

No, never ever purge them.  Doing so can really mess up your computer.  You
can turn them on and off in the extensions controll panel.

No, all are needed. They require no maintenance.

You can plug things directly into the iMac either using USB or firewire.
However some USB items need more power than the USB ports on the iMac's
keyboard provide.  In those cases, it is best to plug those items into a USB
hub that is powered.
