That should be under your Apple menu, Control Panels, but only in
OS9.x. There are no longer Extensions in OSX, and, seemingly, no more
conflicts. Being a 'nix virgin, I'm lost in OSX and what the files mean
in the System, so I know what you're going through. Luckily, I haven't
had any problems since switching to primarily X about 6 months ago. I
really like it and, while not being able to poke around "under the
hood" makes me feel vulnerable, it's a fantastic OS which seems liek
one I won't ever really have to bother to learn about how things work;
they just do.

I'm talking about Sherlock for the Internet. The message you are
getting is referring to finding a file by "content". In other words, if
you only remembered a certain word from within a document but didn't
remember where the document was or the name of the document, you could
find the original file by that key word or part of a word that you
remembered, but you'd have to index your data, first. Otherwise, you
can use Sherlock to simply find files based on their names or parts
thereof. It's a great application that came out in OS 8.5 and still
persists in 10.2.2, but now you don't use Sherlock to find files. You
use the 'Find" command under "File" in the menu bar when you're in the
Finder (that sounds pretty confusing, I think.) I think in Sherlock in
OS9 or pre- Jag X, just open Sherlock and look for the "Earth" icon-
that will allow you to search several Internet sites and search engines
simultaneously. I really don't like the new Jag Sherlock, though. I
still launch Classic and use the old one.

I'm a little rushed, so sorry if these answeres are a little vague, but
I'll bet there's a lot of useful info about Sherlock at apple.com. I
have relied heavily on Sherlock since it came out and it's saved me
probably a cumulative couple of days of wasted time over the years.

Nothing that a fresh installation couldn't fix.

Well, it'll get easier as you go along and learn. That's what this list
and most Mac users are about- helping each other.
