Dennis, Applecare will not send you a reminder notice - at least I didn't get one with either of my iMacs - both of which were purchased new.
I don't usually buy extended warranties on anything but Applecare is the one warranty that is well worth the money. I have had it on both my iMacs and it paid for itself with in the first month on one computer. The other one is pretty new so no serious problems yet but nice to have the piece of mind. Go for it !
