Apple care is one of the best investments you can make. I had an iMac that crashed in September 2001. Just two months shy of the third anniversary of it's purchase. If I had AppleCare, it would have been covered. But I didn't. As my local Apple retail store was not yet open for business, I had to take the computer to an authorized dealer. The guy said my HD and CD-ROM were shot. And he wanted $500 to fix it. Wasn't worth it to me. So I replaced it with a new 600mhz iMac that I purchased from the online Apple Store. Then this past Christmas, I bought an eMac from the Apple retail store in Buffalo. Since that first iMac was problematic from the start, I figured if I buy directly from Apple, I'm less likely to end up with a lemon.
