Yes, on an iMac I have used the Classic/X boots
which you describe. There is a problem of terminology
here. Ever since David Pogue's book, "Mac OSX: The
Missing Manual," I've believed that "OS9" is not
synonymous with "Classic."
From p143 of Pogue's book, I quote:
"The Mac OS9 system folder you want for Classic is
a slimmed-down, streamlined System Folder with as few
extensions and drivers as possible. When you restart
the Mac in OS9, on the other hand, you want maximum
compatibility. You want all your Mac's features
intact, especially the drivers that will operate your
external equipment."
Later, Pogue says:
"Some people maintain two OS9 System Folders, one
that's trimmed down for use in Classic, and another
that loads a complete set of extensions and drivers
... this method doesn't require separate partitions or
drives. Both System Folders, or all three if you count
the Mac OSX System Folder -- can sit on the hard
drive."
I read the above before I saw your posting -- I
tend to worry about how it boots, how it works when
there's a crash, etc. In another part of the book,
Pogue furnishes a good argument for the advantages of
partitioning. All in all, I think I'll stay with
partitions -- a full OS9 on one and Jaguar on the
other. Just for peace of mind ...
