 In my research
I've noticed that some are combo drives that can connect to USB as
well as FireWire.

They are referring to USB 2.0, not 1.1. Nobody makes a USB 1.1 hard drive anymore.

Your iMac cannot use USB 2, so this is not an option for you.

Since, my Bondi Blue iMac only has OS 8.6 and USB
1.1, I was wondering if one of these drives would be usable with it.

Short answer: no.

Would it be bootable?

Yes, but it would take so long that you'd be dead and buried before it's finished. Too sllllloooooooowwww.

Any limitations on size?

Same as on the FW one -- 137MB max (iow, buy a 120GB drive or smaller). That's a function of the HD controller chip on the motherboard, not the connection method.

I know USB 1.1 will be
slow (and I have no intention of upgrading the Bondi)

I don't think you can add USB 2 to it anyway.

 but I'd still
like to know if there would be any benefit to getting a USB/FireWire
drive over the FireWire only drive.

Yes, there's some benefit -- you can sell the drive (or at least the case) to a PC user when you're done with it. :)
