Agreed. But you can still use the USB part of such an external HD, it'll only revert to USB 1.1 speeds. But like Beverly said, "going through USB can make access to a large drive a s-l-o-w process." Allen Barnella wrote: > Since, my Bondi Blue iMac only has OS 8.6 and USB > 1.1, I was wondering if one of these drives would be usable with it. Yes and no. Although most USB devices work with 8.6, you'd better use OS 9.x. 8.6 is notorious for it's bad USB support. Allen Barnella wrote: > Would it be bootable? USB booting has been introduced with the slot-loading iMacs and AGP G4s. See <http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n58430> Allen your FP iMac _can_ boot from USB and FW devices. > Same as on the FW one -- 137MB max (iow, buy a 120GB drive or smaller). > That's a function of the HD controller chip on the motherboard, not the > connection method. That's partially true. Although 137GB is the limit, it's 137GB unformatted. If you'd buy a 137GB HD and format it you'd actualy have 128GB. 137GB / (1.024)^3 = 127.58GB = 128GB. So that's why some people refer to the 128GB limit (binary GB), while others refer to the 137GB limit (decimal GB). * * -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
