In my research I've noticed that some are combo drives that can connect to USB as well as FireWire.
They are referring to USB 2.0, not 1.1. Nobody makes a USB 1.1 hard drive anymore.
Your iMac cannot use USB 2, so this is not an option for you.
The hard drive itself is just a IDE device, the housing it's in is USB. And USB 2 is backwards-compatible with USB 1.1, so any drive should work, provided you have the proper USB and mass storage extensions.
