Am I guessing correctly to think that the tray loading cd-rom extends fully

pull out the tray from the release position? I just got my first iMAC and am
still learing about it.
The slot loader has no tray, nothing to open. Insert the CD a slight amount and it will pull it in. When you're done, select "eject" and it will spit it back out to where you can grab it.

The tray loader opens to where you can insert or remove the entire CD.
