That's the way ours has always worked, yes. To save space, Apple used a CD
drive designed for notebook computers. Many notebook computers have drives
that work the same way, they pop out a little, and you pull them the rest of
the way to open.

Also, you have a TRAY loading iMac, NOT a SLOT loading iMac. Remember how
you said you pulled the "tray" out? Slot loading iMacs have NO TRAY at all,
just a tiny slot in the front of the case that you push discs into, like how
most car CD players work.
