Your problem matches exactly the symptoms of flyback transformer failure.
The flyback transformer is located on the analog board. There are 2 types of
analog board, they are not interchangeable. Apple's service manual shows how
to identify the different types, displaying drawings of the boards. In
practice, all 233 MHz iMacs use the same board, and all 333 MHz iMacs I've
seen use the type 2 board, completely different and not interchangeable.
>From memory, every 266 MHz iMac I've seen has used the same board as the
233, but that doesn't mean some may not. Apple's analog board actually
consists of 2 board linked together by wiring, if you replace this complete
you will need to run an Apple utility to reset the colour balance, if you
don't you may have a colour caste, particularly on darker screens. These
settings are stored on the video neck board, this can easily be left on your
iMac so you don't have to make these adjustments. All leads remove easily,
but if you are unfamiliar with this kind of work be careful removing the
focus lead. You will see the side of the holder adjacent to the lead pushes
down, allowing the focus lead to be easily pulled out. Forcibly remove the
focus lead and you will wreck the board, as the CRT socket can't be obtained
as a spare part. Here in the UK it is getting much less viable to undertake
this sort of repair, users mainly want to put the money towards an eMac or
something better if they have the funds.
