For several years, until installing OS X Panther last month, I was very 
happy with Internet Explorer 5.1.  That may be because most web sites 
are designed with Microsoft IE for PCs in mind and the Mac version of 
IE works very well with those sites.  Nevertheless, you have to be 
prepared for the occasional system freeze.  Just don't keep a lot of 
applications running when using a browser in any OS prior to OS X.  It 
was OK to have Outlook Express, SimpleText, or AppleWorks running 
during an IE freeze; I sometimes ran these to cut and paste from a web 
site to the other apps, but I never lost any files from a system 
freeze.

If you have particular needs where IE does not work well for you, you 
can try other browsers such as iCab, Opera, and Mozilla, but they are 
not as fully developed as IE.  There have been very few people happy 
with the later versions of Netscape Communicator, and the older version 
of Netscape are not likely to do well with web sites designed with 
newer features.
